Autorole hands one or more roles to every new member the moment they join, without any manual action from your team. Set it up once and every person who arrives gets the right starting roles automatically.
Setting it up
Configure autorole from the dashboard or directly with slash commands — both approaches work and stay in sync.
Dashboard: Open your server on the dashboard, go to Autorole, tick the roles you want new members to receive, and save.
Slash commands: Run /autorole add <role> once for each role you want to hand out.
Drag the bot’s role above every role you want it to assign, in Server Settings → Roles. Discord will not let any bot give out a role that sits above its own in the hierarchy, regardless of what permissions it holds. If Newt’s role is too low, it simply cannot give those roles out.
Things worth knowing
Rules-gated servers: If your server requires members to accept rules before they can talk, autoroles arrive when they finish accepting — not the instant they join. Discord discards roles given to someone who is still on the rules screen, so Newt waits until they are through.
Roles the bot can’t give: The dashboard shows any roles Newt cannot currently assign, with the reason next to each one. In almost every case the fix is the role order described in the warning above — drag Newt’s role higher.
Deleted roles: If you delete a role in Discord, it drops off the autorole list automatically the next time someone joins. You do not need to clean it up manually.
Bot autorole: Bots that join your server have their own separate list, configured under Bot autorole on the dashboard. A newly added bot receives those roles immediately — bots skip the rules screen entirely and never receive the human autorole list.
Limits: You can add up to 10 roles to the autorole list. All of them are assigned in a single request, so a burst of members joining at the same time will not trigger a rate limit.
