# Your Data: What Newt Stores and How Long It Keeps It

> Learn what data Newt stores, how long it's kept, and what happens when you remove the bot — including the 30-day grace period before deletion.

Newt stores the minimum needed to run the features you've switched on. Nothing is stored by default until you configure a feature, and everything is deleted — on a schedule — when you remove the bot. Here's exactly what that means.

## What Newt stores

* **Server settings** — your configuration for every feature: log channels, welcome messages, autorole lists, role panels, automod rules, and so on.
* **Join and leave records** — a record of when members joined and left, used to calculate retention figures. No message content is involved.
* **Ratings** — the score each member gave your server via the survey. One score per member; a new vote replaces the old one rather than stacking.
* **Moderation cases** — every ban, kick, timeout, warning, and note issued through Newt's commands, with who did it, who it was done to, the reason, and when.
* **Role panels** — the panels and their button configurations, so they keep working after restarts and updates.
* **Survey reminder log** — a record of which reminders were sent and how many members each one reached, used by `/logging reminders`.

**What Newt does not store:**

* **No message content.** Newt never reads or stores the text of messages sent in your server.
* **Deleted media is never written to a database.** When the deleted media log is active, Newt downloads a copy of an image or video while the message still exists and holds it briefly in memory so it can be re-posted to your log channel. That copy is never saved to any database and is gone as soon as it's been forwarded — or shortly after if the message was already gone.

## When you remove the bot

Removing Newt from your server does not immediately delete your data. Instead, everything is queued for deletion and removed after **30 days**.

The delay is intentional. Bots get kicked by accident, or removed and re-added while someone sorts out a permissions problem. Wiping a server's entire history — cases, settings, ratings, all of it — the instant that happens would create its own kind of problem. The 30-day window gives you time to recover from an accidental removal.

**Add Newt back within 30 days** and nothing was lost. Your settings, moderation cases, ratings, and history are exactly where you left them.

After 30 days, everything is deleted permanently.

### Membership records

Join and leave records expire automatically after **180 days**, regardless of whether the bot is still in the server. You don't need to do anything. Since retention only ever looks back 30 days, records older than 180 days have no effect on anything — they're cleaned up on a rolling basis.
