# Join gate

> Check everyone who joins, and stop raids and bad bots at the door.

Newt checks each person the moment they join. Anyone a filter catches is dealt with before they can post. Unless the filter only logs them, they aren't welcomed or counted as a join.

| Filter | Catches |
| - | - |
| Bot additions | Bots added by anyone but the owner or a trusted admin |
| Unverified bots | Bots Discord hasn't verified, added by anyone but those two |
| No avatar | Accounts with no profile picture |
| Suspicious accounts | Made in the last day, or in the last week with no avatar or a name that looks auto-generated |
| Advertising names | A server invite in their name |
| Account age | Accounts younger than you set: 1 to 720 hours, or 1 to 365 days |
| Username filter | Names with words you block |

Each filter can **only log it** (a note in the mod log channel), **time them out**, **restrict them**, **kick them** or **ban them**. Bots can be kicked or banned. A timeout lasts a day unless you pick another length, from 10 minutes to 28 days.

    * **Strict words** match whole words: `nitro` catches "free nitro" but not "nitrogen".
    * **Wildcard words** match anywhere, spaces and dots ignored: `nitro` catches "xXnitroXx".
    * Fancy fonts and look-alike letters are turned into plain ones first.
    * Up to 100 words. Tick **Also check when someone changes their name later** to catch renames.

A sudden burst of joins turns on raid mode. Newt then deals with everyone who set it off and every new arrival until it ends.

* A raid is 10 joins within 60 seconds by default. Set 3 to 100 joins, within 10 to 600 seconds.
* Newt deals with **likely raiders** or **everyone who joins**: timeout, restrict, kick (the default) or ban.
* Likely raiders are under a week old, have no avatar, share a name with two others apart from the numbers, or were made within 10 minutes of two others.
* Raid mode lasts 10 minutes after the last raider (1 to 120), then posts a summary.
* **Pause invites during a raid** is on by default. **Lock the whole server down too** is off.
* Alerts go to the mod log channel, or to the owner by DM if there isn't one. They can ping up to 5 roles.

Tick **Lock every channel when lots of pings arrive at once**. By default that's 50 mentions within 30 seconds across the server (10 to 500, within 5 to 120 seconds). Channels unlock by themselves when raid mode would end, or sooner with `/unlock all`.

Sets the account age filter in days, from 1 to 365. `days:0` switches it off.

* The owner and [trusted admins](/moderation/anti-nuke#trusted-admins) can always add bots.
* The bot filters need **View Audit Log**, to see who added a bot.
* Newt tells people why in a DM before acting. Untick it on the tab to stay quiet.
* Staff, the owner and trusted admins are never caught by changing their name.
* During a `/lock server`, everyone who joins is turned away.
* Filters are checked in this order: account age, advertising names, username, no avatar, suspicious.
