# Welcome and goodbye

> Greet people when they join and post when they leave.

## <Icon icon="door-open" size={24} /> Set a welcome message

Leave out `channel` to send it as a DM.

Newt replies with a preview straight away.

A goodbye needs a channel. Newt can't DM someone who has left.

A picture with the new member's avatar, a greeting and their member number. Set it up on the dashboard's **Welcome** tab:

* 10 colour styles, 4 layouts and 3 avatar shapes
* Or upload your own background (PNG, JPG or WebP, up to 1 MB)
* The preview uses your avatar and updates as you type
* **Send a test welcome** posts a real one, starring you

The **Goodbye** tab has a goodbye card. It copies the welcome card unless you change it.

## <Icon icon="circle-info" size={24} /> Good to know

* If your server has a rules screen, the welcome waits until they accept.
* `@everyone` and `@here` never ping.
* People turned away by the [account age check](/moderation/automod#new-account-protection) get no welcome or goodbye.
* Messages can be up to 1,500 characters.
