# Role buttons

> A message with buttons members click to give themselves roles.

## <Icon icon="gauge" size={24} /> Make a panel on the dashboard

    On the [dashboard](https://newt.bot/servers), pick your server and open **Roles**.

  <Step title="Fill in the panel">
    Give it a heading, pick a channel and tick the roles. Button text is optional.

    Newt posts the message within a few seconds.

Create the panel, then add a button for each role. The message appears when the first button is added.

**Mode:** *Any number of roles* lets people take several. *One role only* swaps the old role for the new one, which suits colours or pronouns.

* Newt's role must sit above every role on the panel.
* Up to 25 buttons per panel. Make a second panel for more.
* Up to 10 panels, or 25 with [Premium](/help/premium).
* Clicks get a private reply, so people see if something went wrong.
* Editing a panel edits the same message, so links to it keep working.
