# Manage Your Discord Server Soundboard via Dashboard

> Upload, rename, reorder, and delete soundboard sounds from the Newt dashboard — no commands needed. Supports mp3 and ogg up to 512 KB and 5.2 seconds.

The Newt dashboard gives you a full interface for managing your server's soundboard — uploading new sounds, editing their names and emoji, adjusting volume, reordering them, and deleting ones you no longer want. Everything happens in the browser; there are no slash commands for this feature.

## Setting it up

    Open the dashboard, select your server, and choose **Soundboard**. All soundboard management happens from that page.

    The bot needs the **Create Expressions** and **Manage Expressions** permissions to upload and modify sounds. If uploads are refused, re-add the bot to your server to grant the new permissions — Discord doesn't automatically extend permissions to a bot that's already present.

## Worth knowing

**File requirements.** Upload files in **mp3 or ogg** format, up to **512 KB** and **5.2 seconds** long. These are Discord's own limits. The dashboard checks the length in your browser before attempting the upload and tells you if the file is too long, rather than letting Discord reject it with a vague error.

**Editing metadata.** You can change a sound's name, emoji, and volume as many times as you like. These edits don't touch the sound's underlying ID, so it stays in every member's favourites automatically.

**Reordering sounds.** Discord doesn't store a position for sounds — the order members see is simply the upload order. The only way to change that order is to delete and re-upload sounds from the first moved sound onwards, which gives them new IDs. When sounds get new IDs, they drop out of everyone's favourites.

Because of this, the cost of reordering depends on where you drag. Moving a sound near the top recreates everything from that point to the end of the list; moving one near the bottom only recreates the sounds after it — which is much cheaper. The dashboard shows you exactly how many sounds will be recreated before you confirm, and nothing changes until you accept.

  Moving a sound near the top of your list is expensive: every sound from the moved position to the end gets a new ID and drops from members' favourites. Drag sounds near the bottom when you can, and save large reorganisations for when the disruption is acceptable.

**Safe reorder process.** Every file is downloaded before any deletion happens. If a sound's audio cannot be fetched, the whole reorder stops with your board untouched — you won't lose sounds partway through.

**Editing audio.** It's not possible to replace a sound's audio file once uploaded — Discord has no mechanism for that. Trim and edit your audio before uploading.
