# Automod: Nine Automatic Rules for Message Moderation

> Configure nine automatic rules — banned words, invites, links, spam, and emoji floods — that act on messages without waiting for a moderator.

Automod acts on rule-breaking messages the instant they appear, without waiting for a moderator to notice. Each rule runs its own check, applies its own action, and — for anything beyond a plain delete — creates a numbered case in the moderation log, the same as one a moderator handed out manually.

## Set Up Automod

Go to **Dashboard → Automod** and switch on the rules you want. Each rule has its own response and its own thresholds. Alternatively, use `/automod rule` to enable individual rules from Discord and `/automod status` to review what's running.

Set your exemptions **before** you enable any rules. Anyone who can Manage Messages is skipped by default. You can add extra roles and channels on top of that through the dashboard or via the commands below.

## The Nine Rules

| Rule | Notes |
| - | - |
| **Banned words** | Matched as whole words — blocking a short word won't catch longer words that contain it. Invisible characters are stripped before matching, since padding a word with them is the oldest way around a filter. |
| **Discord invites** | Removes messages containing server invite links. |
| **Links** | Has an allow list. One entry covers all subdomains of an allowed domain. |
| **Mass mentions** | Triggers when a message mentions too many people at once. |
| **Message floods** | Catches members sending messages too rapidly. |
| **Repeated messages** | Flags the same or near-identical content sent back to back. |
| **Shouting** | Detects messages that are predominantly uppercase. |
| **Emoji spam** | Catches messages stuffed with emoji. |
| **Walls of text** | Flags excessively long, unbroken blocks of text. |

## Account Age Gate

The account age gate is separate from the nine rules and acts before anyone has said a word. Turn away accounts newer than a set number of days with `/automod minage`. A **kick** sends a DM telling the member the minimum account age, so a real person who joined early can come back once their account is old enough. A **ban** sends nothing, because a ban is not an invitation to return.

Members turned away by this gate are not counted as joins — raid accounts don't pollute your retention figures.

## Five Responses

Each rule can be configured to use one of these responses:

1. Delete the message
2. Delete + warn
3. Delete + timeout
4. Delete + kick
5. Delete + ban

## Auto-Limits

Kicking and banning can't be undone with a click, so automod caps both at **5 per hour** by default. Once the cap is reached, further actions become timeouts instead, and the case records why. This prevents a single bad banned-word entry from emptying your server before anyone notices. Raise the limit if you'd rather it never cuts in.

## Fallback Behavior

If the bot lacks the permission for the configured action, it falls back rather than giving up. A ban it can't place becomes a timeout; a timeout it can't place is still recorded as a warning. The case always records what actually happened, not just what was requested.

## Other Notes

  <Accordion title="Only one rule acts per message">
    A message that trips three rules is dealt with once, not three times.

  <Accordion title="Who gets skipped">
    Members the bot couldn't moderate manually — including the server owner and anyone whose role sits above the bot's in the role list — are always skipped. Trying to act against them would silently half-work: the message would be deleted but the punishment would fail quietly.

  <Accordion title="Cases in the mod log">
    Every action beyond a plain delete creates a numbered case, so `/case list` shows the full picture alongside manual moderation actions.
